Kitchen Remodelers in Rockford, IL

Kitchen remodelers in Rockford work on a housing stock that skews old. The city has about 147,521 residents, half of its housing units were built in or before 1963, and roughly three in four were built before 1980. This page covers 24 kitchen remodelers: 21 in Winnebago County and three in Boone County. Two are based in Roscoe. Showroom retailers, countertop fabricators, design-build firms and general contractors all take on kitchens here, so the first decision is often which kind of business fits the job.

Because so many Rockford homes predate 1978, the EPA lead-safe renovation rule comes up on kitchen jobs. It requires anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in those homes to be certified, with employees trained in lead-safe work practices. Pulling out old cabinets, trim and wall finishes in a house from that era can disturb paint, so certification is a fair question for any remodeler before demolition starts.

Rockford's building permit exemptions include painting, papering, tiling, carpeting, cabinets, countertops and similar finish work. A cabinet and countertop swap sits on that exempt list. The city also does not require general contractors to be licensed, and electricians pay a registration fee or show a license from another Illinois municipality. With no city license to check for a general contractor, the homeowner does more of the vetting: references, insurance and who is doing the electrical work.

Several Rockford firms work from showrooms. Benson Stone Company, rated 4.7 from 434 reviews, has sold home goods since 1930 and fabricates and installs granite and quartz countertops from a restored furniture factory. Andco Kitchens & Baths has been locally owned since 1928 and carries cabinet lines including Omega, Kemper, Koch, Merillat Masterpiece and Aristokraft. Dream Line Remodeling, a design and build studio remodeling kitchens since 2011, holds a 5.0 from 47 reviews. Midwest Stone Source + Design Studio puts kitchen and bath work first, and Luxury Kitchen & Bath. has served the area since 1985.

General contractors and design-build firms make up the other side of the page. Premier General Contractor, 4.8 from 57 reviews, serves Rockford, Belvidere and Freeport and builds concrete countertops. New Leaf Remodeling is a woman-owned general contractor founded in 2011, rated 4.3 from 53 reviews, and planning and permitting sit inside its project management. Macktown Construction Group is a veteran-owned design-build remodeler working across Rockford, Winnebago, Boone, Rock and Walworth counties and out to Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Freedom Builders & Remodelers works in Rockford and the Beloit area. Mulligan Restoration, 5.0 from 6 reviews, focuses on historic restoration and preservation and also remodels kitchens.

Not every business takes a kitchen from start to finish. 815 Stone Crafters (4.8 from 24 reviews) and Forest City Counter Tops, Inc. (4.9 from 9) are built around countertops. 3 Day Cabinet Pros and More has 5.0 from 130 reviews and installs and refaces cabinets, while Floor It Remodeling, 4.8 from 23, refinishes them and is mainly a concrete coatings and painting company. Design Elements, based in Roscoe with 5.0 from 40 reviews, does tile and backsplash design and handles permits.

Beyond Rockford itself, remodelers on this page work in Loves Park, Belvidere, Roscoe and Machesney Park. Handyman Connection of Rockford, 4.6 from 63 reviews, serves Belvidere, Machesney Park, Loves Park, Cherry Valley and Caledonia, and its kitchen work includes cabinet installation and senior-friendly updates. In Boone County the page includes Construction Specialties, C & H Design Center and Beyer Builders Inc. River Valley Kitchens & Baths, based in Roscoe, has 3.7 from 15 reviews. S & R Custom Homes & Remodeling has 5.0 from 9 reviews, a small sample beside Benson Stone's 434. Loves Park, Machesney Park, Belvidere, Sycamore and DeKalb have their own pages.
