Specialists: countertops, cabinets and refinishing
These companies focus on one part of a kitchen, such as countertops, cabinets, refinishing or tile, rather than whole kitchen remodels.

Several of the kitchen remodelers in Decatur have been working for decades. J J Swartz Company has served Central Illinois since 1921 with remodeling and insurance restoration. Dave Munson Construction has built swimming pools, installed hot tubs, built new homes and remodeled in Decatur since 1965, and SL Fixture Co has built handmade custom cabinets, closets and kitchens for more than five decades. This page has 5 businesses, all with Macon County addresses, and Decatur has about 69,815 residents.
The housing sets the work. Half of Decatur's housing units were built in or before 1960, and 79 of every 100 were built before 1980. Promax Construction, J J Swartz Company and Dave Munson Construction all take on full kitchen remodels with layout changes and wall removal, which is the job older floor plans tend to call for. Dave Munson Construction and 3-D Construction and Carpentry also offer free estimates, and Promax Construction, J J Swartz Company and SL Fixture Co are the ones with financing or a showroom to visit.
Promax Construction has the longest review history, 4.8 from 90 reviews. It is an independent, family-owned company founded in 2000 by John Schilawski, who runs it with his wife Sharon. It remodels kitchens and bathrooms and also does room additions, decks, screen porches, doors, windows, siding, roofing, flooring, gutters and concrete. It serves central Illinois, including Springfield, Champaign and Bloomington. J J Swartz Company is 4.5 from 64 reviews and adds countertops and financing to its kitchen and bathroom remodeling.
Cabinet work sits with the smaller shops. SL Fixture Co designs, builds and installs its cabinets with its own designers, woodworkers and installers, and it keeps a showroom (5.0 from 3 reviews). Dave Munson Construction's kitchen work covers countertops, cabinets, flooring, sinks and faucets, islands and storage (5.0 from 2 reviews). 3-D Construction and Carpentry works from Argenta and serves the Decatur area. It has more than 30 years of building and remodeling experience, installs cabinets, and gives customers 3D images of the project before it starts (5.0 from 5 reviews).
Those three 5.0 ratings rest on 2 to 5 reviews each, so they say less than the 90 reviews behind Promax Construction. Arthur, Lincoln, Springfield, Champaign and Urbana have pages of their own for readers closer to those towns.

Does the age of Decatur's housing change a kitchen remodel?
It can. Half of Decatur's housing units were built in or before 1960. Homes built before 1978 fall under the EPA lead-safe renovation rule, so anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in them must be certified. Ask the remodeler you are considering whether it holds that certification.
